Where Can I Find Free Soil Testing?

Soil testing services are provided by several local agricultural extension programs of colleges. In certain parts of the United States, getting a soil sample box from your nearby library is all it takes. Following the instructions on the box, you collect the sample and deliver it to the testing center.

Not all ag extensions, however, provide free testing services. If these services are offered where you live, you will need to check. There may be a small charge for mailing your results or the chemicals used in the testing process. The amount of data you receive is typically quite reasonable.

Making pH Tests at Home

With only a few straightforward components, you may do a very basic pH test at home. Two clean containers, your soil sample, some baking soda, some white vinegar, and some distilled water are all things you’ll need.

Divide the soil sample between the two sanitized containers. It just needs a small amount of soil to perform the test, so you should put a few of spoonfuls in each.

Add a half cup of white vinegar to one of the containers and carefully monitor the outcome. Your soil is alkaline and needs extra acidic content to get it to a neutral soil state if there is any bubbling or fizzing sound.

Half a cup of water should be added to the other container, and the soil should be loosely combined with it. Add a half-cup of baking soda next. As with the previous test, if the soil fizzes or bubbles, the outcome is that your soil is acidic and needs extra alkaline material to neutralize it.

You have beautiful, neutral soil if neither test yields a result. This test gives you an excellent starting point, but it won’t guarantee that the soil is ideal for your particular varieties of plants. You can fine-tune later with more sophisticated testing options.
